Speaker Hannah Leckie - Community Fundraiser -Cardiff and the Vale Hospice - Marie Curie

President Charles with Hannah Leckie

As we approach 1st March we will once again see collectors selling the now familiar daffodil badges in aid of cancer care.  Llantwit Major Rotary Club, together will other organisations in the town have for many years helped raise money for the Marie Curie charity.  Hannah Leckie from the charity attended a meeting of the club at the West House Hotel to talk about the work they do.  Hannah is attached to the Cardiff and the Vale Hospice in Penarth.  The charity was founded in 1948 with the aim of helping cancer sufferers and also their families.  The charity now simply called Marie Curie offers expert care to thousands of patients many of them in their own homes.  They make thousands of home visits offering round-the-clock care to more than ten thousand patients.  Many of the calls they receive are from anxious family members seeking advice for which they are able to draw on assistance from doctors, nurses social workers and chaplains.

Hannah explained that another important role of the charity is in funding research into cancer.  One pound in every five collected goes to vital cancer research.  As a result of the generous support received from so many  it means that the charity is able to assist between forty and fifty thousand cancer patients a year free of charge for those who need their help.

Rotary President Charles Anderson thanked Hannah for visiting the club to talk about the important work her charity does in the community.  He pledged the support of Rotarians again this year helping to raise money in Llantwit Major selling the familiar daffodil badges on 24 February.
