Russell Crawford, Communications Director of the Scottish charity, Malawi Fruits, was the speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw. Russell, who resides in Chapelhall, joined the charity, as a volunteer, in 2012.
Russell, who’s ‘day job’ is a general manager with a scaffolding firm, previously worked as a business development manager.
At Malawi Fruits, Russell takes the lead in organising the social media and presenting talks to educate and inform groups of the work of the charity and how it is addressing the many needs in Malawi.
Malawi Fruits is committed to working with its partners in Malawi to establish and grow sustainable community businesses in the north of the country. Its aim is to provide start-up finance, training and support to agriculture and related community enterprises. It encourages small holder farmers to see their smallholding as a business and they provide support and training to help develop these fledgling businesses so they can maximise their income and provide for the education and healthcare needs of their families.
The Charity is working on a three stage development programme for the farmers. Firstly, supports the farmers to grow a cash crop, often for the first time, second it irrigates the land so the farmer can get two crops per year, and, finally it provides crop processing facilities to add value to the crops and further drive up the farmers’ income.
After Russell answered a number of questions posed by the members, the vote of thanks was proposed by Jim Rae.
The winner of the weekly bonus ball was Jane Allan.'What We Do' Main Pages:
