Speaker Trevor Spurway on designing a grandstand

At The Raceourse; Kathryn in the Chair; 33 Members plus one visitor Tony Tucker from RC Kloof. A delicious meal. Chris loveluck as d/r on his last attendance before he leaves us for 12 months “en France”, then moving to Bath area.

Speaker - our own Trevor Spurway, on “The Paddock Stand” – the building we were in. History – The Racecourse dated from 1927 when the Portman Estates had it laid out; A Right Hand course – one of 15 out of 41 racecourses in the country (Clockwise). Excellent turf so popular with trainers, and great facilities were necessary for Owners and Trainers, hence this extension to the Paddock Stand. Height and dimensions dictated by sight line from the Stewards Box, and profile seen from surrounding hills and roads. Layout dictated by Fire Exit capacities and a welcoming entrance for Ticket purchasers –(no turnstiles).

An excellent talk on the complexities of modern architecture.

Club Business:- report from Tony Blackshaw on the recent 3 Clubs reunion in Redon. His description of their experiences on the Ferry, driving with a voluble back seat French lady, a tendency to go down One-way streets in the wrong direction; being misdirected to the Ibis Hotel in Nantes, and not finding the lunch venue, were tempered with the warm welcome from the French and Swedish. He was impressed with Kathryn’s speeches in French, and their visit to the Museum of the Machines of the Isle of Nantes. Opened in 2007 in the former covered shipyards, there are marvellous huge mechanical Elephant, Carousel and towering machines to ride on.
Next year will be in Uppsala, Sweden in September.

Friday this week will be the President’s Party at Pickeridge.
Monday 18th June Meeting is at Rumwell Farm Shop and Restaurant. d/r Mason, s/f Janes D.
Monday 25th June at SCCC – Assembly and Handover. APOLOGIES TO D JANES Please.
