H&R: Peter McCrossan & David McLeod
VoT: Willie Talbot

The speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was Per Johanssen, who, for the last five years, been Head of the European Parliament Office in Edinburgh.

Per grew up in the west Swedish region of Värmland and studied law, psychology and German at the University of Göteborg before moving to Germany to complete a post-graduate programme at the European Institute of Saarland University.

Having started his career as a trainee Judge in the Swedish courts, he moved to Brussels where he worked as an EU affairs consultant before joining the European Civil Service.

After 5 years in the European Commission and the European Data Protection Supervisor, Per is delighted to be in his present position, especially as his wife is Scottish, and he speaks Swedish, English, German, French, Norwegian and Danish. After office hours, you will often find him somewhere on the football pitch, on the ice rink or attending rock concerts and he also enjoys spending time with his family and travelling.

Per advised members that the European Parliament is directly elected by citizens of the 28 EU member countries. It is made up of 751 elected Members. 73 of them are from the UK with 6 representing Scotland. Elections take place across the EU every five years under a system of proportional representation. The MEPs have the power to make European laws in nearly all areas of EU activity, together with Council of the European Union. The European Parliament also approves the budget of the European Union, elects the European Commissioners and the Commission President and has the power to sack the whole body of Commissioners. The EU is made up of over 500 million people from 28 Member States including the UK and it is founded on a series of treaties, ratified by all 28 national governments.

He then spoke at length regarding Brexit and spent some time answering a wide variety of questions put to him.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Willie Talbot.
