Daventry and District Dementia Café

Daventry ‘Danetre’ Rotary Club President, Nick Blunt, was pleased to present a cheque to Daventry & District ‘Dem. Café’ at the Abbey Centre today.

A Dementia Café was previously run in Daventry by the Alzheimer’s Society until they lost their funding from Northants. County Council.

However the Volunteers and Carers decided that it was too important to lose the café, so they formed a committee to consider a way forward.

This was the birth of Daventry and District Dementia Café in April 2017.

To start with things were a bit ad hoc: for example, the early cafes were held in the iCon Café [[and to whom they will always remain grateful as they were not charged anything - except for the coffee they drank]], but as they grew in confidence and started approaching local businesses for help, enough sponsorship was received which enabled them to return to the Abbey building, which is more suitable than a public space as it is safer and quieter.

The Dementia Cafe is run on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of the month by volunteers who supply a mix of games, quizzes, reminiscing and now music sessions. Some of the members of this group have known each other for a long time and had supported each other through some really tough times.

Daventry ‘Danetre’ Rotary Club is delighted to have been able to donate a significant sum from their Charity accounts in order to guarantee and ensure the continuation of this excellent and valued service to the Local Community.
