Day Five Carlisle to Preston. The day we went from having ridden 400 miles to having 400 left.

A beautiful day on a bike, although a rather eventful one.

Very hilly at first through moorland on our way to the Lakes. Met a couple of guys going the other way. Some crazy descents through single track, gravelly roads eventually leading to Keswick. Stopped for lunch at the really lovely Filling Station cafe on the outskirts of town. Then on to Grasmere & Ambleside.

Superb rolling countryside after Bowness, then things went a little awry. Paul’s rear wheel was buckled, another broken spoke! Chris was already off the front, so the decision was made for Paul & Yohann to get the wheel fixed while Adrian & I carried on. We still had over 50 miles to complete.

Heads down through the impressive city of Lancaster & through the very pretty Garstang, where our DS/soigneur Yohann found us, only to tell us that he’d actually driven Paul back to the spot where his wheel had broken so he could ride the remaining miles. Star man!

As I type this (9:15 pm) Paul & Yohann have just arrived at the hotel.

In case anyone is wondering this really is a big challenge & it is testing us. Not sure exactly how we’re facing 100 mile day after 100 mile day but we’re over half way now. We’re beating it!

Tomorrow 91 miles to Shrewsbury, & rain
