Edgar Shields a past president of the Glernrothes Rotary Club was welcomed to-day as our speaker. A Rotarian of forty years Edgar trained as a mechanical engineer and he explained his passion for Alvis cars.
He went to school at Kilmalcolm Academy and managed to evade PE lessons for three years by being last in the line as they marched out to the playing field before being discovered by the rector. All the time he preferred being in the scrap yard to taking part in the P.E. field.
He showed slides of Alvis cars over the years starting with his first buy which he bought with a school riend from a scrap yard which cost him £25. It looked a wreck but after the two worked on the vehicle for some time it looked wonderful. He told us that his car was eventually sold in order to buy an engagement ring.
The connection between Alvis cars and Rotary was made clear by Edgar which was friendship, support and fellowship and he gave details of his various special trips including one to the USA and another to Shetland working for the Polio Project where £6,000 was raised. He took part in the Flying Scotsman Rally and raised over £20,000 for the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
When asked how many cars he now had he answered that he had four cars two of which were Alvis cars which are no longer manufactured but it was still possible to obtain spares. A man with a great passion for his Alvis cars he was also a very amusing and interesting speaker. Eric Brown gave the vote of thanks.
