A Great Community Evening For Sutton in Ashfield

 by Rotary in June 2018

On Monday 4th June President Liz Barrett welcomed over 60 guests to The Princess Suite in for a buffet meal and presentation to this year's winners in the Community Action Fund Applications. Liz said,

“Tonight, we are saying thank you to volunteers from successful groups, on behalf of the Sutton Community. So, if you donated to Santa’s Sleigh, or at our Prize Draw, or at any other event, your money is being passed on to one of these good causes.”.

Hosted by Community Coordinators John Pearce and Sarah Baraclough, cheques and medals were presented to successful applicants.

1. Students and teachers in who were funded to take part in the National Magistrate Mock Trials. Winning the local heat, they went to the Regional Finals coming second to the World Champions!
2. Carousels under 5’s – to purchase natural materials for children to explore including a mud kitchen, a construction site and sensory flowers beds.
3. Ashfield Activities Association – for an interactive Dinosaur Experience! Adult size dinosaurs will walk amongst people at local events providing facts and excitement as they go. 
4. Ashfield Play Forum - for a Giant Target Game and crazy golf clubs to be used on Holiday Play Days, when a minimum of 600 children, per event, attend in local parks.
5. Community of Christ – to fund another Big Lunch and family get together on the Carsic Estate. 
6. Forget me Not Dementia – for an advertising display and garden bench, a lifeline for people with dementia and their carers.
7. Huthwaite Involving Patients – for Portable Public Address system for information events such as Prostate Cancer Awareness.
8. Horticultural – to provide Gardening Therapy Sessions for people who are enduring Mental Illnesses.
9. John Eastwood Hospice – to refurbish The Viewing Room, where families say final goodbyes to their loved ones.
10. Link 2000 - for members to spend a day on a Countryside Exploration, enjoying a day out with friends in a supported, safe environment and with increased friendly interaction with the public. 
11. New Cross Community Church, Children’s Referral Centre – to provide storage for quality clothing helping children feel more included, alleviating financial pressure on families who struggle and hopefully to relieve stress and anxiety for parents.
12. 1300 Squadron Air Training Corps – to fund Duke of Edinburgh Award activities where cadets develop skills for work and life. This will include camping, walking, cooking, outdoor activities, learning an instrument and volunteering in the community.
13. Sutton Senior Forum - Outing to Springfields for senior, often lonely and isolated members, helping to increase and spread friendship, fellowship and fun.
14. Trevor Middleton Town Centre Manager for Ashfield District Council was also given a Community Medal for his determined work in helping Rotary site a Defibrillator in .

A pleasant surprise, during the evening, was when Kingfisher Care Homes said they had run a fund raising Cake Making Event for Rotary. They presented Rotarian John Bates with a cheque, for Rotary Charities.

John Pearce Community Service and Membership Coordinator ended the evening by saying,

“We have thanked you all for your work, commitment and care in our Community. These are the values Rotary stands for. So, now, please, help your local Rotary Club by volunteering for us - even better - becoming a member. Maybe you know someone in the community who would make a great Rotarian? If so please let thm know about what we do – we need your support to keep Rotary alive and well in Sutton – then we can help even more.”
