Richard Graham MP.  The similarities between the English Civeil War and Brexit

Club welcomed our local MP, Richard Graham, who gave a highly polished, perceptive, and interesting talk about the parallels between many of the background reasons for the English Civil War and our own present day trials and tribulations with Brexit!

With his “easy-to-listen-to” delivery it isn’t hard to see just why Richard is a politician, and the comparisons he drew between the two ages, could one say the two “conflicts”, was uncanny. In both cases, after awhile, we tend to forget how something started and what we are fighting about! In the case of the Civil War, after 11 years as a Republic, we reverted to a Monarchy…does this mean that, sometime after Brexit, we will return to the bosom of the EU…time will tell!

At the beginning of his talk Richard indicated that he would not be talking about modern day politics…but this aversion did not seem to apply to “Question Time” when the majority of our members’ queries referred to his thoughts on our present tangles with Messrs Barnier, Tusk and cronies.

When tackled, I believe, by Chris Brent-Smith as to whether he would like to be Prime Minister one day he, not surprisingly, pointing out the enormous pressures our current PM faces on a daily basis, declined…we shall see – Richard is obviously a highly intelligent man, so who knows, in some future time, history might just record that we had a Leader of our Country in our midst on October 26th 2018!!
