An introduction to the Nenescape Partnership Scheme.

Nenescape’s work is part-funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with a grant of £2.6 million and has a total value of approximately £4.5million when all partnership organisations contributions are taken into account.  It is a five year programme allied to environmental work being carried out under the Nature Improvement Area project.  Nenescape brings together the nature heritage conservation and restoration work of NIA together with community heritage, historical research, and more public engagement to provide a scheme of projects along the River Nene that reflect the landscape’s past, its current position and to explore developments for the future.  In all the partnership* is focused upon delivering 16 projects.

Management of the project is provided by the River Nene Regional Park, an independent community interest company (CIC) that has been responsible for creating a network of environmental projects (known as green infrastructure) extending from Daventry to Peterborough linking the towns of Northampton, Towcester, Wellingborough, Kettering and Corby. This is an independent, not for profit organisation that is able to hold assets on behalf of the community.  It has to meet certain standards and produce an annual community report.  Day-to-day supervision is provided by a team of three individuals working closely with mentors from the funding agents.

The scheme has been broken down into three areas of focussed activity, each containing a number of partnership projects.

Listening to the past

Through a series of activities the objective is to engage communities and disseminate hidden stories among a wider audience. These include:

LTTP3 – Ice Age to Digital Age – Interpretation (research and support to partners).

LTTP5 – Ice Age to Digital Age – Nenescape on Film (Screen Northants documenting project).

LTTP6 – Community Grant – (Flagship grants £40K and series of smaller grants).

Although not listed in the above the Rotary Club of Northampton West has been engaged in supporting the project virtually from its inception.  Thanks to the involvement of a Rotary Exchange Student from Canada sponsored by the club we learnt of its plans through her placement with the Wildlife Trust.  Northampton West supported the application to the Heritage Lottery Fund, which resulted in the project gaining a £2.6 million grant towards funding the five year programme.

Once developed, it is intended that the Nene Valley will attract future tourism to an historic landscape that has not been previously identified as a unique geographic area within the United Kingdom.  Much of England’s history can be traced through the arrival of its diverse population along the River Nene, as can the development of the region.
