Tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw took the form of a McGonagall Evening, celebrating the work of Scots poet, William Topaz McGonagall.
The evening is played out done in reverse, initially, Pres. Andrew Steven thanked everyone for coming and wished them a safe journey home, before proposing the final toast, ‘Rotary and Peace the world over’.
This was followed by Past President Paul Begley proposing a comprehensive vote of thanks.
After the ‘Combing-in of the Stovies’ (to the tune of the Dambusters March), the dish was addressed by Past Pres. Andrew Murray and hotel staff served the meal starting with the tea, coffee and mints, moving on to the desserts, the main course and finally the starters!
The Immoral Mammary, in praise of McGonagall, was given, with humour and expertise, by Tom McPherson. John McGeary then gave, in his own inimitable style, a rendering of McGonagall’s most famous work, the Tay Bridge Disaster. Superb musical entertainment was then given by Cameron Hill, pianist and vocalist.
Peter McCrossan then gave his rendition of the Great Election Disaster of 2016, his take on the Trump election. Past Pres. Andrew Murray concluded (or started) the evening’s entertainment by giving a riotous performance of the Rotary Night Out.
Pres. Andrew gave the Grace, after welcoming the members and their guests.
As usual, the evening was a great success and was enjoyed by all.
