PRESIDENTIAL CHANGE OVER 2018

PRESIDENTIAL CHANGE OVER 2018

On again the Rotary Wheel has turned its full circle and we welcome a new - second time around - President Derek Berryman, he became a member of the Rotary Club of Oldham through the HeartStart Programme.

At the start of that meeting, still President David Halford welcomed the two Students of the Year winners - Mubashirah Hanif and Thomas Tupman.

A his valedictory meeting David had already expressed his thoughts on the honour that goes with being President, he was so filled with emotion that he forgot to discharge one of his final duties - his Presidential Citation - Past President Alan Whitehead.

After the exchange of the medals of office and enthronement of Vice President Robert Fenton, Derek once again reminded each of us to spread the word of Rotary amongst our friends and the unsuspecting Oldham public.

It has become the tradition to invite along, with parent or guardian the successful nomination for The Clubs Student of the Year award.  Our new President welcomed  Mubashira from Hathershaw College, and Thomas from Oldham Sixth Form College.

Winner of the 11 to 16 years of age group, Mubashirah is an active member of Hathershaw College Young Entrprise team and has alraedy startede up two businesses, one of which is working alongside her siblings, baking and selling beautiful, tasty cupcakes.  She also runs an on line stationary company called Marble by Mubashirah.

Her main ambition is to be involved in the fashion industry, both as designer and manufacturing her ideas.  A talented artist her work is on display in Liverpool, and hopefully, soon in New York.

16+ winner Thomas is determined to spend his life as a teacher in Physical Education and is already involved helping with coaching at his College and in other local schools.

He is particularly grateful for the Lap Top prize, far better than anything he or his family could afford, and it will be a useful tool as he continues his further education.

For the first time both winner and runners up in the 16+ section were both from the same school, both attending Sixth Form College, anmd before that Thomas was a pupil at Hathershaw College.

Both of these establishments are alway in contention for producing winners.
