A Riverside Walk

Rotary Walk - 21st August, 2018

Many thanks to President Kevin for organising todays walk.

We met up on Tan yr Eglwys Road beside the church in Rhuddlan at about 11.45am  where there was a convenient section of road with no parking restrictions and no charges! - We were only a small group  Gwyrfai, Kevin, Nigel, David, Bryn and Ifor  but it didnt take long before Kevin had to run back to find two members who had got lost,  in fact, only 50 yds from where we had parked the cars.

Once we were all re-united a question was raised about the location of the nearest toilet. Use a bush said our president.  There were no bushes in sight! We pushed on and enjoyed numerous stops to observe a selection of wild birds and farm animals.

We all began this walk with great expectations for the natural, geographical and historical aspects and we were not disappointed.  President Kevin stopped us at numerous locations to point out  various features  e.g. Ysgol Dewi Sant (from a different perspective) and the sewerage works.

Having walked along the bank of the estuary some way we turned in with the landfill site on our left and worked our way round to Morfa Gwyber Farm.  We were welcomed by a pack of sheep dogs who sang a harmonious chorus of ‘woof, woof, woof’.  They proved to be much more friendly than they looked.

Kevin had organised the visit to this farm so that we could see an old traction engine that had been on the same farm since it was first made.  Although the engine was clearly in need of maintenance it was a wonderful sight to behold. Our host, Huw Davies, also showed photos of when the engine was in use and photos were taken of President Kevin imagining what it was like to drive it. Bales had been laid out for us to sit on and our host brought beer and crisps to augment our packed lunches.

We spent quite a while discussing the state of the dairy industry and talking about the rotary club. After thanking our host for his hospitality we continued on our journey passing fields with some very handsome shire ponies.  Gwyrfai enjoyed the opportunity to commune with the animals and fed them some green grass from the pathway  clearly much sweeter than that in the field.  Well done Gwyrfai!

The crossing of the dual carriageway took some time as we had to wait for a big enough gap for old men to cross!  We returned to the cars via the main road through Rhuddlan.  I spotted a specialist cheese shop that I might go back to visit.
