Visit to the Discovery Museum

A party of ten of us enjoyed a guided tour of the former Coop Warehouse that is now Newcastle's Discovery Museum - a very interesting building. This was followed by an enjoyable lunch at Mario's Italian Restaurant

We had a most interesting tour of this fascinating building, thanks to an excellent guide. This fine late Victorian building was built to house the North Eastern headquarters of the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS). It opened in 1899 and was known as Blandford House.

It was the distribution centre for more than 100 Co-operatiVe stores throughout the region, from Malton in the south to Berwick in the North and from South Shields in the east to Carlisle in the west.  There were departments for groceries, dothes, shoes, furniture and stationers a large banqueting hall, offices and a bank

In the 1960s and 70s shopping patterns changed. Goods were supplied by road directly to local Co-op stores. Blandford House was no longer needed as a central warehouse.

From 1981 museum displays were installed with a strong science and engineering theme. During the 1990s aid 2000s a £14 million redevelopement gave the building a new lease of life as the Discovery
