Ronnie Convery, Honorary Italian Consul, was the guest speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw and his presentation was on “the Italian community in Scotland”. In addition, he is Director of Communications of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Ronnie was given a knighthood, the Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia, by the President of the Italian Republic, in September 2008, for his services to the Italian community in Scotland.

In January 2017, Ronnie was appointed the Italian Honorary Consul for Scotland and he advised our members that the last ten years had seen the biggest migration of Italians coming to live in Scotland. He informed us that many Italian Scots could trace their ancestry back to the 1890’s when their forefathers escaped drought, famine and poverty in their homeland for a better life in Scotland. It was not until World War 1 that a sizeable population of Italian-Scots of over 4,000 began to emerge with Glasgow hosting the third largest community in the UK.

Ronnie said that today that Italian Scots can be found working in all manner of professions. However, a large proportion of the community have plied their trade in the catering industry working in chip shops, ice cream parlours, pizzerias and restaurants across Scotland.

After Ronnie answered a number of questions, Peter Brown proposed the vote of thanks.

The winner of the weekly bonus ball was Hugh Graham and the winners of the monthly numbers club draw were Charles Keeper, Tom McPherson and Jane Allan.
