Rotary Young Musicians 2018-2019

The Local heat of the Rotary Young Musicians Competition took place on Thursday 29th November in St. George’s Church, Dumfries.

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District proudly sponsored and put forward Young musicians from Wallace Hall Academy and Sanquhar Academy into Thornhill & District’s preliminary round of the 2018 Rotary Young Musician Competition.

However due to the adverse weather conditions flooding Sanquhar and the road and rail networks which prevented Sanquhar Academy entrants from attending the competition held in Dumfries, so sadly Wallace Hall Academy entrants went forward by themselves.

They joined entrants from Dumfries schools for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of singing and playing, amazing the audience with their skilled performances. Mitch Peacock won the instrumental section prize for his fine piano playing, Ailsa Black, accompanied by Declan McGarva on piano, won the vocal section prize for her wonderful voice. They will both progress to the Area round at Annan Academy at 7:30pm on 14th February 2019

Prize winners from Dumfries Club’s entrants included :-

1st in vocal section Callen Love: 2nd Kate Kyle, both from Dumfries High School

1st in Instrumental section James Knox playing tenor saxophone: 2nd Harry McGowan playing bagpipes. Both of St Joseph’s College.

Frank Davis , the Adjudicator, had a very difficult task, and said so himself in his summing up. He felt it was the highest standard of performance he had heard in all the years he has been judging the competition.
