Shoe Boxes and December Meeting

Shoe Boxes and December Meeting

Taunton Vale Shoe boxes appeal.

Members of Taunton Vale Inner Wheel Club provided 46 shoes boxes full of goodies and necessities this year, with help from the Abbeyfields home.

Ruth, our co - president this year, spends months collecting items donated by members, buying extra goods with financial donations and finally overseeing the packing of the boxes with the help of her team.

The handover of the boxes will see them travelling to Eastern Europe, to arrive in time for Christmas.

Presentation to the Children's Hospice South West 5th December 2018

A giant sized cheque for £2,000, was presented to Neville Pope from the Hospice. The charity was the focus of fund raising during the Presidential year of Cynthia and Liz, 2017-2018.

Neville gave us an update on the work of the Hospice.  The average  time for supporting the child and family is eight years and 536 families were supported last year alone. This includes 4,000 nights of Care provided; this is when all aspects of Care are assumed by the Hospice and the family can just be a family together.  There were 51 new referrals last year, which illustrates how important is the fundraising which supporters undertake. The Ride For Precious Lives raised £1000,000! The Ride, around Somerset, was conducted in the middle of the heat wave last summer. Phew. The latest event is Santas On The Run.  Perhaps the most remarkable fund raiser was the man who celebrated his birthday with a sky dive. It was his 90th birthday! Flower demonstration at Oake Manor 5th December 2018

Cheryl, a co-president this year, 2018-2019, delighted us with her demonstration of Festive Flower arrangements.  We were shown how to build up the arrangements layer by layer and given advice on choosing greenery to form the base before it is embellished with fresh or dried flowers and even lights!   However, the final effect is very much a matter of skill; Cheryl has that skill and shared her expertise with us, creating arrangements which were later raffled.

The Raffle raised another £100 for STAR our charity for this year, thanks to the generosity of the members who bought tickets.  Some Ladies went home with very happy smiles on their faces, while tenderly carrying their beautiful flower arrangement; just in time for Christmas!

For more information on STAR, or to make a donation, please see their website                                             somerset-star.org.uk.

A Happy Christmas to all members of Taunton Vale Inner Wheel and their families.
