How Durham Rotary helped Bill Clinton's Ambassador to the UK

Philip Lader

The Rotary Foundation has been welcomed into the Chancellor’s Court of Benefactors.

Since 1949 the Foundation has provided scholarships to over 200 Oxford scholars including a former US Ambassador, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and a director of the Ansari Africa Centre.

“The university is enormously grateful to The Rotary Foundation for its support of graduate scholarships at Oxford” said professor Louise Richardson, Oxford vice chancellor. “For almost 70 years, this support has enabled students from around the world to benefit from all that Oxford has to offer”.

The Chancellors Court of Benefactors celebrates and recognises Oxford’s exceptionally generous friends and supporters.

Connection to Rotary North East

Philip Lader was Bill Clinton’s Ambassador to the UK from 1997 to 2001. In April 1998, he was guest speaker at the Durham Rotary Club 75thanniversary dinner. At that dinner, he recalled his days as a Rotary scholar. Whilst on a weekend in Paris, his Oxford host received news of the death of his father. A telephone call was made to a nearby club in Paris and Rotarians arranged a direct flight home for the young student.

Philip told those present that experience endeared him to Rotary throughout his life. He signed the club visitors’ book “Philip Lader, United States Ambassador to the Court of St James’s”.
