Docks Beers

Rotarian and director of Docks Beers, William Douglas, hosted members of the club at the recently opened brewery located in the former St Barnabas' church in King Edward Street. William started by giving us a short history of the premises and illustrated the building modifications that were required to accommodate the brewing equipment in a safe and hygenic manner.  He then explained the concept behind the branding of Docks Beer and the marketing strategy.

Real Ale vs Craft Beers

William then gave an overview of the brewing process, explaining how the alcohol content is determined and the flavour is created  by using different types of hops and other ingredients such as sea buckthorn.  He also explained the difference between Real Ale and Craft Beers with reference to the methods of storage and packaging.

The Tasting

Naturally, we were given ample opportunity to sample the products accompanied with a selection of pizzas after which we were given the opportunity to take a closer look at the vessels and equipment.  We were also invited to take a look at the extensive but as yet undeveloped upper floor of the building which William has plans to convert into an entertainment venue.  It was interesting to find that many of the original features of the church were still clearly recognisable.

Regeneration

The return of a working brewery in Grimsby is clearly a milestone and the repurposing of a former church is another step towards the regeneration of docks area of which William is very proud.  We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the brewery - well done and a big thank you to William and his team.
