Sammy Stein was the speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.
Sammy is chairman of the Glasgow Friends of Israel which is grassroots organisation whose aim is to support the right of the state of Israel to democratic self-determination, counter anti-Semitism and advocate positively for truth, justice and peace.
He said that on Saturdays he, along with other volunteers, man a stall in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, which advocates a two state solution based on the establishment of a viable Palestinian nation living in peace and harmony with Israel. He informed members that there’s only one way to have peace and that’s to support both sides, you can’t support one at the expense of the other. Obviously, peace is not an easy question, or situation, or it would have been solved by now. But this doesn’t mean that it can’t be done.
He did not come to say what the peace solution should be because he thinks the people who are involved should decide what the peace should look like. The reason there hasn’t been peace is that the surrounding Arab nations do not want to accept an Israeli state. If they were willing to back an Israeli state, there could also be a Palestinian state.
Sammy then gave a presentation on modern Israel, bringing members up to date with the current situation. He answered a number of questions put to him by members and Past President Jim Peat proposed the vote of thanks.
Jim Robertson was the winner of the weekly bonus ball competition.'What We Do' Main Pages:
