On the evening, Stewart Allan drew the short straw and was the guest speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.

Stewart is the father of Sam and Scott who run the Rivals Gym in Wishaw, a purpose built martial art and fight training facility. Professional world champion athletes, Sam and Scott, have produced world class facilities to help build the champions of the future. The gym provides Martial Arts classes for people from the age of 3yrs old and through their structured training programmes the club introduces young people to the principles of Martial Arts and get them started on their journey to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to have the confidence to be able to defend themselves should the worst happen.

The emphasis is on developing mobility, strength, flexibility, confidence and fitness with classes being arranged according to age and ability. At Rivals they are dedicated to instilling a comprehensive and practical understanding of Martials Arts to stop and prevent bullying from adversely affecting their child and youth practitioners. Stewart said that bullying comes in many different forms, especially when youngsters are alone and away from friends or family.

In their classes, there is a strong emphasis on identifying the many signs of bullying and learning how to de-escalate without resorting to physical altercations. They encourage their participants to talk openly about any issues they come to encounter. The goals at Rivals are simple; to give the children essential self-defence knowledge to empower them with life skills, confidence and a healthy sense of self-esteem learned through Martial Arts. In today’s reality, we must be as vigilant as ever.

Martial Arts provides necessary tools to safeguard against a wide array of threats and give the confidence to do so intelligently and independently should the need arise. Stewart gave details of the current projects being undertaken by Rivals and how they go about fundraising.

After Stewart, and Steven, answering a number of questions, P.P. Jim Robertson proposed the vote of thanks.
