Angus Bryson was the speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw.
Angus is an Explorer Scout who has just finished his Highers at Strathaven Academy and is about to go to Zanzibar, with fellow pupils, to build houses for the needy.
When he returns, he has a quick turnaround before setting off to North America where he will attend the World Scout Jamboree and this was the basis of his talk to the club members.
Angus said that Scouting offers an amazing range of adventures that you won’t get anywhere else. From climbing to kayaking, snowboarding to stage performances, or from camping to coding, Angus has been challenged to learn and achieve things he never thought possible. He explained that teamwork is at the heart of everything Scouts do, and by facing new experiences, as part of a team, you’ll make friends for life. He told us that, whatever your background, you’ll be made to feel welcome in Scouts and supported to be the very best you can be.
The Jamboree, being held in the U.S.A., it being hosted by Canada, Mexico and the U.S and there will be over 40,000 Scouts attending for more countries than participates at the last Summer Olympics. It is costing Angus £4,000 to get there and he detailed the many fundraising events he had undertaken ranging from sponsored cycle rides and walks to bag packing in local supermarkets.
The 2019 World Scout Jamboree will be held from 22nd July to 2nd August at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. Angus said that, unlike any other youth event, a world Scout jamboree invites you to surround yourself in the cultures of the world by joining with his new Scouting friends at a single destination for 12 unforgettable days. Make lifelong friendships and memories with young people from more than 160 national Scout organizations representing more than 200 nations and territories. He will unlock a new world of life-changing experiences that will help him develop his physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual life. The theme for the 24th World Scout Jamboree, “Unlock a New World", speaking to the new adventures, cultures, and friendships that will be shared by Scouts during the event.
Angus answered a number of questions posed by the members and P.P. Tom Sleith, a former Scout Leader, proposed the vote of thanks. Interestingly, of the Rotarians present it transpired that over 65% had been Scouts.'What We Do' Main Pages:
