The issue of mental health in our local businesses has come to the forefront in recent months particularly after a recent report showing that 1 in 4 people at work either had or had had a mental health problem.
RC Falmouth has won a Global Grant of £50,000 with funds from the Invictus Trust increased by District 1175 and The Rotary Foundation to support the job creation aspects of the new Recovery College Cornwall. The College has been funded by an ESF Grant of £1 million and will operate at least until the end of 2022. It has premises in the Threemilestone Industrial Estate which houses interview and lecture rooms with Café Chaos providing excellent food and drink.
Our role is to use our networks to contact businesses to invite them to an introductory meeting where they will be told about the mental health awareness courses we will be running (Rotarians will also be invited to these sessions). The idea being that they would then provide work experience places for the students at the College. They would also have the opportunity to take advantage of the considerable experience on offer – free – to improve their employment policies and training to provide a mental health friendly work place with considerable benefit to their bottom line.
The Working to Recovery Online Open Recovery College has been a vision
[of ours} for a number of years. Unlike other Recovery Colleges that have
a geographical bases, this online college is open to anyone, anywhere.
Students are able to share and learn from each other from around the
world. Students can learn whenever they want, accessing the online
college whenever they want and continue learning.
It is important for individuals to be supported in their recovery
journeys by effective and committed mental health workers, family
members, friends, local communities and services. The challenge is to
ensure that the opportunity to benefit from recovery practice is
available to all.
Most service users, family members, workers, managers and policy makers
agree there is a need to change the current system in order to be more
recovery orientated. To accomplish this we have set up this Recovery
College to enable recovery practitioners to share their committment,
knowledge and experience of good practice, with each other and the wider
community.
This is achieved at the Recovery College through various means including:
