Weekly Meeting - Euroscolar Presentation by Jack Bell

Jack Bell, pupil at Perth Grammar, was interviewed by Rotary Club of Perth to attend the Euroscola programme.

Jack Bell, pupil at Perth Grammar, was interviewed by Rotary Club of Perth to attend the Euroscola programme. His language skills and keen interest in politics and his 500 word essay -Brexit – A Threat to Human Rights? convinced the interviewer he was an ideal candidate to out forward for selection which he duly was.  Euroscola is a project which involves Rotary clubs sponsoring a pupil proficient in French at an Advanced Higher level to join a group of school pupils on a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg

It is a unique event and allows young people to learn first-hand about European Integration. Students are selected from all member states to become a member of the European Parliament for one day. They take the floor in sessions to debate and vote on resolutions on current affairs all the while practising their language skills and making friends with fellow students from across Europe.

Jack came to Rotary club of Perth Lunch on Thursday 30th May to give a report about his week-long trip

The trip started on Sunday 27th January. The first two days there were ice – breaker and team building sessions all conducted in French with visits to the Council of Europe on the Monday.  On the Tuesday the group visited Kehl in Germany which was followed by a street survey getting the views of the local population about the issues they felt were important. There was also a series of quizzes with questions posed in different languages to encourage new alliances to be formed with non- English speakers. Thankfully Jack manged to get to know some participants from Cyprus, Slovakia, Latvia and Poland which with all the languages the combined group spoke, enabled his team to be runner up in the quiz. On the Wednesday they were given the Strasbourg challenge which involved making a short film about a subject of their choice. Jack’s group chose food and they spent a fine afternoon in Strasbourg visiting the many eateries before presenting the film at night. The highlight of the trip according to Jack was the Euroscola day in Strasbourg. There was a question and answer session hosted by Daniel Radtke, an MEP from Germany.  Jack was even given the honour of asking the first question which was “How Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would be considered after Brexit by the EU”. Brexit did dominate the start of the session but after the fifth question was asked it was agreed to move on from the issue of Brexit

It was a very busy week but Jack admitted that he had now met friends for life. It had given him a tremendous opportunity to further understand politics in Europe and will give him a balanced perspective when he pursues his intended career in Law and politics
