Weekly Meeting at SCCC

Mon, Aug 12th 2019 at 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Speaker from Compass Disability Services

33 Club Members were present, plus Rachel Bye from Compass Disability Services (CDS).

Rachel gave us a comprehensive presentation on CDS which was established in Taunton in 2000. It provides a wide range of services for people and children of all ages, including the physically disabled and mentally challenged. It receives no government funding and relies on bids, fund raising and charges for its services. It aims to empower those with disabilities and their carers, and to help them as much as possible towards Independent living. The range of initiatives carried out by CDS was well illustrated by the'Compass Wellbeing' leaflet distributed at the meeting. (In addition, the short briefing note issued before the meeting by John Binns provides further information on this very worthwhile local charity.) It was evident from questions and the further discussions between Club Members after the meeting that there could be increased involvement with CDS and Abbeyfield and the Halcon Project Team.

Club Matters: The Gods Favour Academy Kenya proposal by the Internatioal and Foundation Committee was discussed. This proposal had already been considered by Club Council and had their support. After discussion, the Members present approved the proposition -'To release funds up to a maximum equivalent of 450,000 Kenya Shillings towards the cost of upgrading the buildings at Gods Favour Academy - the equivalent of £3515 at the current rate of exchange.'

Bill advised that there was a 'thankyou' event for those who helped out at the Flower Show on September 5th. Contact Bill if you wish to attend.

The new Breakfast Club is having a pig roast on September 15th to celebrate its formation. All Club Members are invited. More information from Bill.
