The end of an Era

On Tuesday 2nd July, the Rotary club of Langley and Iver hosted a final farewell to our own Rotaract Club at the Pinewood Hotel.
The club was proposed in June 1975 and started regular meetings the next summer. A few of the Rotarians including Jerri Rees and Brian Betts, who were present then and are still active in the club; we thank them for the history.
Sadly the membership has dwindled to 3, but through email contacts etc. many ( 25) past members were able to come and join us for this occasion.  There was a lot of catching up with news and reminiscing going on.

Roland McCarthy, who was a Rotaracter and later President of the Rotary Club itself, gave an amusing account of some of the activities they were involved with. These included digging a huge sand-pit for the Thames Valley Adventure Playground , having obtained use of heavy digging equipment, and inviting elderly folk for tea concert parties. Some potential members had been warned that it was a marriage bureau, but that didn’t put folk off and many families have grown out of the fun and co-operation they took part in.

We would love to have anybody back in the Langley & Iver Rotary fold to continue the fun and fund-raising, to make a difference for others.
