Calum Stewart and Stephan Calvert gave a talk about their forthcoming visit to Mexico.to work on a water treatment project there. They are graduates from Edinburgh University and their interest is in sustainable development. The project in Mexico is named ‘Caminos de Aqua’ The part of Mexico where they will be working, with a population now of over 2 million people, has seen much development in recent years and is now short of clean water. The water now available is contaminated with toxic chemicals, including arsenic and an excess of fluoride.
The solutions currently being tried include ceramic filters, groundwater treatment and rainwater harvesting. Calum and Stephan’s work will include looking at other solutions, particularly in the hope of reducing the use of expensive outside laboratories.
President Lindsay presented Calum and Stephan with a cheque for £450 to help with their expenses. They will return to the club on their return to tell us of their experiences.
