You couldn’t make it up - Iain Fairbairn

.

Tonight’s speaker, Iain Fairbairn, a member of the Rotary club of South Queensferry, was accompanied by his new wife Paula and Immediate Past President of South Queensferry Rotary Club Sandy Mackenzie. We also had a number of wives and partners with us to hear Iain’s tales from his career with Lothian and Borders Police under the banner of “You couldn’t make it up!”

He shared stories of his 30 years from joining in 1982 proudly following in his dad’s footsteps. During his early career he received 2 Chief Constable’s commendations for off duty arrests before moving through a variety of roles in CID, plain clothes drug squad and into Traffic.  This was great as Iain’s love of big fast cars could be indulged! Then he seemed to develop a thing for guns too completing his fire arms training!
He became a driving instructor teaching other police colleagues various techniques including how to ram another vehicle! Thereafter he became involved in security escort protection looking after Princess Anne, Edward and Sophie and the Prince of Wales albeit in a less fancy car!
Throughout his talk Iain shared humorous anecdotes and stories from his many experiences retiring in 2012 saying no to Police Scotland but deciding only weeks ago to join Paula instead! And from speaking with Paula I think that’s been his best decision!
The vote of thanks was warmly offered by Me!
