BUCKINGHAM ROTARY CLUB PRESS RELEASE

Flood Forecasting and Local preparedness to Flooding in Buckingham!

We recently welcomed Tamsym Ellway, Flood Resilience Advisor from the Environment Agency to an evening meeting of The Rotary Club of Buckingham.

Tamsym explained the remit of the Environment Agency dealing with droughts, pollution and floods in and around the flood zones of the Great Ouse, Buckingham.  Within her presentation, Tamsym showed photographs of well-known areas of our beautiful town hit by flooding over recent years.  Nelson Street, Well Street, Ford Street and Candleford Court to name just a few.  She explained in layman terms the double peak effect and how property level protection boards are used to help reduce flooding of homes and businesses.  It is good to know that Tamsym and her colleagues work to help to ensure our local area is as protected as it can be to the heavy rainfall, we sometimes experience – even if her visit was on one of the warmest and driest weeks of the year!  If you want to find out if you are at risk of flooding you can call the Environment Agency’s Floodline on 0845 988 1188.

We have a wide variety of interesting speakers at our meetings, enjoy social events as well as raising awareness and money for local, national and international charities and good causes.  We meet weekly at Buckingham Golf Club (alternate Monday lunchtimes and evenings) and welcome visitors and potential new members to join us.  For more information, please contact our membership officer, Jeff Samwell by phoning him on 01280 860111 or dropping him an email at jeff.samwell@yahoo.co.uk.
