This evening's meeting featured a guest speaker, Rick Squires from the Chippenham Rotary Club.
the talk was attended (using Zoom) by 10 members and Rick gave an insightful and interesting talk followed by questions from the pariticipating members.
Rick's talk was on the Wellboring project which is based in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
Welllboring funds and organises the development of boreholes, pumps, pipes and equipement to velar, clean, safe and redily available water to 13 schools in the Kisumu county of Western Kenya. They also train school staff and locals in the administration of the wells to enable the water to be used to the best effect.
They have provided 13 wells (boreholes) in the Kisumu county. This helps provide water for 7,500 schoolchildren and 20,000 local inhabitants.
The water is drawn from the ground by means of a hand operated pump, this means that no electricity is required to operate it. The pumps cost about £500 and are maintained by trained local operatices at minmal cost. If the boreholes were not provided the water has to sourced from local supplies, often contaminated lakes and/or rivers. These sources often have contamination from cattle, sewage and other means.
This provision of these water pumps/boreholes has helped prevent illness and death to many as well as a marked improvment in the schoolattendance figures, if the kids are ill they cannot attend school - in the same way as if the adults are ill they cannot work or look after their family.
