Introduction to Rotary - April 15th

On Wednesday April 15^th the members of the Rotary Club of Knighton and District held an information evening for friends and aquaintances who wanted to discover more about the activities of the Club.

It was an relaxed affair held at the Baron of Beef in Bucknell, the Rotary Club's lunch time venue, with a buffet meal followed by some informal presentations.

A short entertaining video of some of the social and fundraising activities was followed by an explanation of the local, national and international charities that the Rotary Club supports.

It was also explained that club members organise a number of different events to raise money for these charities, as well as to support individuals in the community who may have special projects that require funding. The Club also supports Rotary's Young Chef and Young Musician competitions.

Fund raising events include street collections, quiz nights and skittles evenings as well as youth concerts, cabaret evenings, race nights and the annual charity golf tournament, this year to be held at Kington Golf Course on June 5^th.

Charities supported this year include both local air ambulances, the Knighton and Presteigne Support groups, the District nurses, the Kids Out charity for children with special needs, literacy projects in Uganda, Shelterbox disaster relief to countries worldwide plus Rotary's "Polio Plus" programme to finally eradicate polio from the world.

But the overall emphasis of the evening was to show that being part of a Rotary Club is enjoyable and sociable as well as being able to help those less fortunate than themselves. Good friends are made and useful contacts are established in the community so that club members are more able to help out where possible. Everyone said how much they had enjoyed the evening, now knew more about Rotary and were looking forward to getting involved to a greater or lesser extent with the club in the future.
