Bromley’s Mayor finds just one word to describe the Bromley Rotary Youth Awards

Last Friday night some 250 proud parents, friends, teachers and Rotarians crowded into the Langley Park Performing Arts Centre to celebrate the achievements of 23 young people from Bromley who have made significant contributions to the community.

Bromley’s Mayor Cllr Mike Botting presented awards to 23 students from ten of Bromley’s secondary schools. The awards were for outstanding achievements in their own community ranging from raising funds for charities, to helping disabled children, to caring for family members.

His one word was “WOW”

Every story was different but every boy and girl, from age 11 to 18, had an inspirational tale to tell.  Some had travelled across the world, others had helped friends and neighbours nearer home. Some had devoted themselves to a single person or event, others had worked for many charities. Some had contributed alone, others had worked with organisations or social networked.  All had used their own imagination and drive to contribute to the community in which we live – often unbeknownst (until now) to the school that they attend.

Since 2015 Bromley Rotary Club has been making these awards and telling these stories. Our young people are truly amazing!

The winners were:

 Vedant Agarwal (a hospital volunteer), Oliver Chinoy (champion litter-picker), Casey Fisher (Cats Protection Society charity worker), Callie Louise Fossey (volunteer at Biggin Hill Care Community), Isabella Griffiths (works with Anna Kennedy’s Autisms Got Talent), Tabitha Hurst (set up a group for autistic children), Sahishnu Jadhav (a cross Channel swimmer), Seyon Jeyakanthan (expert in behavioural issues), Nithilen Leninkumar (a carer for his disabled sister), Tomas Lloyd-Mills (cricket for the disabled), Nicole Lyacos (Girl Guide), Eva MacMullen (Scout and ATC cadet), Matas Seilius, Emily Taylor, Audrey Blanco and Clara Beevors (volunteers at the Bethlem Community Centre), Maria Malkowska (hospital worker in Uganda), Matthew Pollard (trumpeter for the Royal British Legion), Thinesh Sachithanandam (carer for his elder brother), Isabelle Sharpe (Sea Cadet who helps disabled riders), Vivan Upadhyay (tutors refugees), James Wickham (Beaver leader) and Alex Withers (Army Cadet Corporal).

They came from the following schools St Olave’s Grammar School, Harris Girls Academy Beckenham, Harris Academy Bromley, Farrington’s School, Charles Darwin School, Bishop Challoner School, Chislehurst School for Girls, Bullers Wood School for Girls, Langley Park School for Boys, and the Archbishop Tenison School.
