Rotakids

Rotakids Symington commenced the 2023/2024 session with a meeting at the school in the Autumn to establish the new Rotakids Committee at Symington Primary School. As usual our school liaison partner Miss Roseanne Smith, Class Teacher and Deputy Head, had the children well motivated and ready to go. The interview process was quickly under way, and the children impressed with their preparedness and enthusiasm. The Committee positions from President to Project Planners were quickly filled.

The nature of the projects, which the children wished to undertake was established and broke down into the following areas;

1). For the School
2). A Local Project
3). An International Project

The school project involved the provision of a long required water dispenser for the schoolchildren. This solved the problem of the children using random taps around the school. The Rotakids initiated appropriate discussions with all interested parties and the dispenser is now installed to popular acclaim.

An agreed local project was undertaken in the run-up to Christmas 23. Discussions were had with the Night B4 Christmas Charity as the Rotakids were inspired by the “Red Bags Full of Joy” community gifting movement. The charity advised the school as to the nature of the items required and Rotakids set up a School House competition to support the collection of the goods. Of course the outcome was a complete success.

An International project is currently in the planning stages: The intention is the support the “Mary’s Meals” Charity which exists to provide nutritious meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest countries. Rotakids are planning to “Make Some Dough” by involving the whole school to bake, donate and sell home made baking. There will also be a competition for the best bakers. This should all happen on Mon 25th March.

Rotakids Symington are certainly not short of ideas and plans are afoot for other activities such as;

• An inter house competition for World Book Day (7th March) involving “Masked Readers” for the kids to identify.
• A visit to Prestwick Rotary by the children when they can update us in their own words. ( Provisionally 16 May)
• “Kit for All” involving the swapping of pre-loved sports clothing/equipment.

Additionally Prestwick Rotary continues to assist Symington Primary in its long standing connection with the Townend Care Home in the village. The children make regular visits to assist in planting raised flower beds and to meet the residents to the mutual benefit of all. Rotakids convenor Edith Sterrick and assistant Allan Dunlop both from Prestwick Rotary went along with the Rotakids for there most recent visit . All the bulbs were supplied by Rotary.
