Some of the projects we have contributed to during the Rotary year from July 2008.

 Hillingdon Young Carers

Hillingdon Young Carers provides help for young people who look after elder relatives who cannot do things for themselves.  Often they are the child's parent.  They may do housework, cook, shop or even help to wash or dress the person they care for.  They may simply give lots of emotional support and comfort to the person they help to look after.  Young carers may find it difficult to relax and have fun because they look after someone in their family. Hillingdon Young Carers provides someone to listen if you they to talk, give chances to meet young people in similar situation, provide a Youth club, days out and weekends away, provide information and advice for the whole family, including benefits and help to get extra support at school if they need it.

The Mayor of Hillingdon 2008-2009, Cllr Brian Crowe, selected Hillingdon Young Carers as one of his two key charities.  We were delighted to provide £1,200 from our collections for this worthwhile cause.

Every year, an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. That's one person every five minutes. Most people affected are over 65, but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies.  On Saturday 18th April, club members joined Rotary's national initiative, in conjunction with The Stroke Association, in checking the blood pressure of members of the public.  97 "victims" had their pressure checked, with a small number needing to return for a later check.

For more information on the Stroke Awareness call 0845 30 33 100 or visit the Know your Blood Pressure Pages.

Mencap is the voice of learning disability. Everything they do is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability and their families and carers.  In Hillingdon, Mencap provides a swimming pool for disabled people which needs maintenance.  We matched their fundraising for a new pump with £500 from our collections.

Abbeyfield

Is a leading provider of not-for-profit care for older people.  They run care homes across the UK, including within Hillingdon.  We helped their maintenance burden to the tune of £1000 from our collections

Age Concern, http://www.ageconcern.org.uk/ is a national charity for the elderly.  Jointly with Age Concern in Hillingdon we hosted a concert by the Vyners School Swing Band which raised over £2,000.  Concerts by the Vyners Swing Band, led by Paul Harris Fellow Perry Parsons MBE, have been a regular event for us for the last three years, previous beneficiaries having been Michael Sobell and Harlington Hospices.
