Dundonald Castle

Tour of Dundonald Castle

Dundonald Castle

One of Scotland’s hidden gems

Dundonald Castle, one of Scotland's most historic sites provided an ideal venue for 12 members of the Rotary Club of Hunterston to learn more about this once famous Ayrshire stronghold.

Tucked away in the quiet, rural landscape in South Ayrshire, the 14th-century hilltop fortified ruin was historic home of Scots King Robert II, grandson of Robert the Bruce. It has historical links to the Stewart dynasty, the Wallace and the Cochrane families, the latter being favourites of Charles II.

The castle is noted for its impressive barrel-vaulted ceilings and spectacular coastal views.
