RIBI launches Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) is launching an appeal for donations to help rebuild the thousands of lives shattered by the Haitian earthquake.

Stuart Martin, Chairman of our District World Community Service Resource Group said; “We have all been horrified by the reports of the earthquake disaster in Haiti, a country which has suffered so much already through political unrest, civil war and previous natural disasters. The immediate needs are for Shelter, Water, and Medical support.I have now received information about Rotary’s response which I have passed on to the clubs in our District, and I do hope that you will be able to respond in whatever way you can. This disaster follows on so quickly from those in the autumn which I wrote to you about and asking for your help, but coming now when many clubs will have completed their Christmas collections you may be able to make a further response to the Haiti Appeal.”

Further information about cash donations to the appeal can be found on the RIBI website and an article, written by Stuart and first published in Rotary Today, can be found here.

The latest information about the deployment of Shelterbox and Water-Survival Boxes can be found on their websites.

RIBI Young Citizens Awards 2010

See the Eye on the Wheel Extra newsletter for further information.

Television presenter Konnie Huq recently visited India with Rotary volunteers and took part in the National Immunisation Day, delivering polio vaccine alongside our volunteers. She produced a short film for the BBC and was interviewed on the Breakfast programme on Sunday 22nd November. Take a few minutes to read her report and look at her film, it shows why polio eradication is so important and the major effort for Rotary across the world.

Sarah Boseley, the Guardian Health Editor also took part in the immunisation day, read her report, published in the Guardian on Friday 27th November.  A photo gallery taken during the visit can also be seen here.
