Brief Details: Story: Judith Diment, Pictures: John Tagg

Over 100 Rotarians and partners gathered at the Sindlesham Masonic Centre, Wokingham on Friday July 3rd, to see Terry Kenyon from the Rotary Club of Reading Matins receive the chain of office for District Governor of the Thames Valley Rotary District, from out going District Governor Malcolm Boddington. Terry has worked in education throughout her career and recently retired from HM Prison Service and lives in Henley on Thames.

Terry’s first duty was to present the district governor elect medallion to Laurie Cunningham, and the district governor nominee medallion to Niall Blair. Terry introduced her 2009-10 District Team, and reminded her audience of the Rotary International theme for the year “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands ".

Terry said” Rotary has given me extraordinary opportunities to become more closely involved in a positive way in my local community as well as national and international communities. "Hands-On-Rotary" is what I enjoy whether it is helping installing a well in a small village in the Rajastan Desert or helping a child to read locally in Reading. The Polio Eradication Programme remains a priority in the international arena and we will be working hard to support the $200 million Challenge to Rotary to match the donation by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Throughout the Thames Valley Rotary Clubs will continue to support projects for improving water, health and hunger, and literacy. Having worked in education I am aware of the power of literacy and education to change lives and work with local schools is another priority for me for the coming year.

We also have a lot of fun and if you feel you would like to be part of our organisation and help to make a difference in the world then please contact us. I am very proud to be heading up this Rotary District which comprises about 2000 men and women in 60 clubs spanning the Counties of Berkshire, Oxfordshire, part Middlesex and part Buckinghamshire.”
