Eighty eight young people in teams of four students from seven schools across North Yorkshire attended this year’s Rotary Club Technology Tournament at Catterick Garrison.

This Rotary Club Technology Tournament, one of eleven such events over the whole of Yorkshire, aims to develop young people’s interest in design and technology along with their problem solving, communication and team working skills.

Using wood, metal, rubber bands and other modelling materials each team had to build and operate a coin sorter. They had their work cut out with less than 5 hours available to plan, build and test their models in front of the judges. All the teams succeeded in building a workable coin sorter.

The Tournament is consistent with the National Curriculum. Teams, depending on the age of the students, were at foundation, intermediate and advanced level. The complexity of the task increased at each age level.

The Commanding Officer of Catterick Garrison, Colonel Nick Millen, presented prizes to the winning teams which were:

Wensleydale School: Foundation Level key stage 3 (11 to 14 years)

Barnard Castle School: Intermediate Level key stage 4 (14 to 16 years)

Richmond School: Advanced Level key stage 5 (ages 16+)

This year’s event was kindly sponsored by S & K Windows of Northallerton, Bag2School Ltd of Northallerton and North Yorkshire Timber.

In his award presentation Colonel Nick Millen drew everyone’s’ attention to the educational benefits of the day’s activities and was pleased that his REME Officers were able to share their expertise and help with the judging. He was struck by the enthusiasm and ingenuity of the students. He also thanked the Rotary Club for investing in tomorrow’s design & technology by organising the event.

The Technology Tournament is only one of a number of exciting annual events organised by Rotary to help develop the skills of young people. They include leadership courses, young chef, musician and photography competitions, and youth sailing.
