'Turning surface water into drinking water - offering relief from waterborne diseases'
Even today, more than one billion people in the world are without access to safe water.
At any given moment, about half of the world's poor are suffering from waterborne diseases, of which over 6,000 – mainly children – die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water.
Safe water interventions, therefore, have vast potential to transform the lives of millions, more especially those in areas of the world suffering disasters both natural and man-made.
The District LifeStraw project has been launched following the success achieved from presentations to not only Rotary Clubs within District 1270 but also to local schools and community groups.
The aim of the project is to provide funding to support the purchase of water purification tools for inclusion in ShelterBoxes and LifeBoxes.
Currently, every ShelterBox sent to a disaster area contains a Family LifeStraw and every LifeBox 6 Personal LifeStraws.
Many of you will be familiar with the LifeStraw manufactured by Vestergaard Frandsen, currently 2 models are available:
The LifeStraw – Personal (indicative cost £3.50 each)
Highly portable ..Able to Filter up to 700 litres of water..1 adult for 1 year & a child up to 2 years
The LifeStraw – Family (indicative cost £15.00 each)
For static use....Tent, shelter or building....18,000 litres of water....a family for up to 3 years
The Project…..
To raise funds for large numbers of LifeStraws for specific areas of the world is not practical, but to provide funding for LifeStraws for inclusion in ShelterBoxes and LifeBoxes is possible.
By targeting ShelterBoxes and LifeBoxes we can ensure that LifeStraws are being used at the point of most need anywhere in the world.
The indicative cost of the two types of LifeStraw makes the purchase of even a small number by any donor attractive and possible.
The Project provides for individual donations, it also provides a tool to make 'Presentations' to local schools and community groups who may also wish to contribute financially.
The Project provides a 'Presentation Pack' on CD Rom, everything that you will need for your presentations…..
A PowerPoint presentation, handouts, presentation certificates and cheques.
Also if required a special LifeStraw Project Collection Box.
To cover costs, we ask that a donation of £5 is made for each CD Rom and £5 for each Collection Box…surplus funds will be paid to the Project Account.
How you can help….
