Home | Child Mortality-Mwanza project | Report from Mwanza- Job Completed!

We completed the job yesterday and handed over the renovated Theatre Block to the Health Authority’s chief officer, standing in for the Commissioner/Governor of the island.

All the key doctors and other staff were there and we all feel a great sense of satisfaction with the standard of work and growing participation by staff.   For example, we were delighted that theatre staff rolled their sleeves up and asked to be allowed and taught to tile the second theatre.   Milestones!   Staff and elected representatives have made commitments to continue the work of finishing-off and introducing sound maintenance arrangements.

We are tired but very happy with the way we as a team melded and used what were an extraordinarily appropriate range of skills.

Tonight we meet as guests of the RC of Mwanza and shall bring your greetings.  There will be exchanges of banners from various parts of D1040 and a speech or two.   We will emphasise the joint commitment we have made, and the need for active host involvement in monitoring, supporting and encouraging the staff on Ukerewe.   The Rotarians unloaded and reloaded the container for shipping to the island, freeing the container for its return.   No mean task, as we found out when we (slightly) helped the staff unload the truck at the hospital on Monday evening, amidst ululating and dancing - a fantastic scene.

We handed over a written report on our work, with a list of items provided.  John and others gave as much guidance as possible on use of the equipment and stressed certain changes that were needed.  More detail in due course.   Contact is being made with Yorkshire press and we have specific written impressions and reports (e.g. from school visits) by the team members.

REMIT has been most impressive, with two workers giving up the week to deliver with our help all the nets to surrounding towns and villages.
