Community & Vocation Project list 2009-2010

 Literacy

a)     'Right to read' project – Rotarians volunteer to help out listening to primary school children reading in schools.

b)    Dictionaries – super dictionaries to give, donate as prizes or use as they see fit. £3.40 each (delivered to clubs chosen address). Each Comm/Voc chairman in each club will receive one. Need to be ordered through District by end of Dec 2009.

c)    Readingmatters – a new project aimed at encouraging Rotarians to mentor secondary school children with reading difficulties.

Environment

a)    CO2 emissions projects – see leaflet for emissions offset scheme.

b)    District Environmental competition. Simple form to complete off the web.

RNIB – Talking Books

Not just for registered blind people but for those that can no longer use large print books.

Clubs can get involved in three ways

1)    No financial cost – introduce those in your community who could become users of the Talking Books scheme – it's not just for the registered blind.

2)    Low cost option - by sponsoring the cost of a 'special CD player' at either £25 or £75 per year to allow a person to use this free scheme at home

3)    Book sponsorship - sponsor a book and its reading by the author or a celebrity – between £ 500 and £ 2500 per book. Your sponsorship is acknowledged on the CDs and played at the beginning of the book reading..

Kids Out

Special Needs children are taken out by the Rotary Club.

Stroke Awareness/Blood Pressure Days

Clubs arrange Stroke Awareness days with the aim of reducing the danger of strokes, by checking blood pressure and offering advice and leaflets.

 Vocation

Assisting clubs with reviewing their Vocational activities, and suggesting possible service opportunities using the Rotarians life skills.
