Pupils Praise Rotary's Lifeline Event

Pupils attending Oswestry Rotary Club's Lifeline to alert youngsters to the risks they might encounter in everyday life have given the event their seal of approval.

This emerged in reports provided by participants taking part in the annual event staged at Park Hall and supported by the police, fire service, public protection staff and voluntary bodies in Shropshire and Powys.

Announcing award winners of the Junior Reporter competition run alongside the event Dr John Cleaver, the chairman of the Rotary Club's Vocational Committee, said: "Feedback shows that the older primary school pupils who took part held in Lifeline 2010 enjoyed the experience while learning about some of the dangers they could encounter.

"The reports have also proved helpful in assessing the scenarios designed to help 10 and 11 year-olds streetwise and showing how being aware of what's out there can avoid potential hazards."

Pupil reports highlighted the importance of "thinking safe."

Drug awareness captured a deal of interest with one 10 year old saying this was her favourite activity "because I've never seen drugs in my life and it also taught me not to take sweets from anyone."

Scenarios featuring fire protection -- with advice on escape and the testing of alarms -- and internet safety proved popular. Youngsters were warned of the harm that careless use of a computer can cause with more than five children a year getting into trouble through the internet.

Bullying, safety on the roads, down on the farm and at the seaside attracted considerable attention as did the importance of being aware of the recovery position in the event of an emergency.

The overall verdict was summed up in one reporter's comment: "I enjoyed it all and it's a shame that I can't go again. If I could I would go 1,000 times."

Award winning reports were received:-
Arddleen CP School (Zara Baker)
Llandyssilio Church in Wales School, Four Crosses (Jack Foulkes, Jack Griffiths, Rebe Melia and Erin Ellis)
