Recycling Facts - Did You Know That ..............

Recycling waste electrical and electronics saves -

1.2 million tonne are disposed of in the UK each year including 2 million televisions and 15 million mobile phones which is equivalent to approximately 3.3 tonnes of waste electical and electronics products per person over their lifetime.

  • Recycling allows the recovery of many precious metals albeit in small quantities
  • Recycling mobile phones means that they can be refurbished and reused in developing countries

Recycling textiles saves -

1.2 million tonnes go to landfill each year but if eveyone bought one recycled woollen garment a year it would save -

  • 370 million gallons of water
  • 480 tonnes of chemical dyestuff
  • The annual cost of landfill clothes has used 2,400 billion ballons of water in its manufacture.

Recycling spent batteries saves -

  • The average UK house uses 20 batteries a year which is equivalent to around 25,000 tons nationally but only 1,000 tonnes are recycled.
  • Metals recovered on recycling are lead, nichel, cadmium, nichel hydride, steel and small amounts of rare earth metals

Recycling garden and food waste saves - 

  • Put in general waste ends up in landfill producing methane on decomposition (25% more hamful than CO2)
  • Whenn recycled can poduce compost for agricultural and garden use so preserving peat bogs - 1 tonne of composted bio waste saves 200kg peat.

Recycling a tonne of plastic bottles saves -

  • 1.6 tonnes of oil
  • 1.5 tonnes of carbon

Recycling 1 tonne of paper saves - 

  • 17 trees
  • 31,600 litres of water
  • 2,100 litres of oil
  • 3,500 kwh of electricity
  • 70% less air polution

Recycling a kilogram of aluminium saves -     

  • a net 14 kwh of electricity over making it from raw materials that is 1.50 at domestic rates
  • 4 kg of chemicals used in the process
  • 5 kg of bauxite
  • 2 tonnes of polution
  • 1 tonne CO2

Recycling a tonne of glass saves -

  • 1.2 tonnes of raw material
  • 300kg CO2
  • and glass can be recycled indefinitely

Recycling a tonne of steel saves -

  • 1.5 tonnes of iron ore
  • 0.5 tonne of coal
  • 1.8 tonnes of solid waste
  • uses 60% less water
  • results in 85% less air emissions
