Youth Speaks

Please Note that this Year’s Youth Speaks Competition in 2019/2020, in District 1190, will follow the same format in 2019/2020, as in previous years. Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RotaryGBI) has changed this Competition at National level. As a result no Club or School in our District should access or use any information in connection with Youth Speaks from either the Rotary GB&I or the RGBI Websites as it is not talking about Youth Speaks but the new National Debating Competition which has now been reconfigured and renamed as ‘Rotary Youth Speaks - A Debate’.

Therefore the District 1190, Youth Speaks Competition in 2019/2020 will only operate to Regional level when we hold the ‘Grand Regional Final. The Youth Speaks Information Pack, Entry Form, Workshop information and Booking Form will all be forwarded to participating Rotary Clubs and Schools, or contact Richard Lea on richard@lea-cars.co.uk

The Rotary Youth Speaks Competition is a well-established, highly regarded and successful competition. It is designed to support and encourage the development of effective communication skills.

The Competition offers young people:

  • Experience in speaking on a public platform as a member of a team,
  • Discipline in dealing with a topic in a limited time period,
  • Impartial feedback and assessment of performance by experienced adjudicators.
  • Attendance at a Rotary Public Speaking Skills Workshop to develop speaking as well as speech preparation skills.

The Competition is open to all schools and college communities including those that are home educated and any other young peoples’ community organisations, for example, community Interact, Scout Groups, Girl Guides etc.

There are two age groups – Intermediate for Students aged 11 to 13 on 31st August 2019 (Years 7 to 9) and Senior for Students aged 14 to 17 on 31st August 2019 (Years 10,11 and College or 6th Form).

Key Dates:

  • 4th October 2019:   Final date for giving schools information about heats at Club level, again working with other Clubs if necessary, using the District 1190 Entry Form and the D1190 Guidance to Teams document. Also offer Workshops to schools for their teams and interested students; 
  • 31st October 2019: Notice of your Club’s Participation to the District Coordinator. Workshops should be complete;
  • 17th January 2020: Final date for your Club’s local Competition;
  • 20th January 2020: Final closing date for entries and cheques to the District Coordinator for the District Final. Cheques for £40 per team payable to “Rotary District 1190” please;
  • 8th February 2020 District Final - Windermere School, Patterdale Road, Windermere, The Lake District, LA23 1NW;
  • 9th May 2020 – Regional Grand Final – Hosted by our District 1190, at the University of Central Lancashire, (UCLAN), Preston Campus, Preston, PR1 2HE.

Young Writer

This National young Writer Competition is a well-established and successful competition promoted by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RotaryGBI).

It is a three-stage competition, designed to support and encourage the development of writing skills.

The Competition aims to encourage young people to:

  • Use their writing skills.
  • Write with imagination and creativity.

The ‘THEME’ for 2022-2023 is: “PEACE”. The ‘Task’ is to produce a written or typed story in prose entitled ‘Peace’. The written entry could be fiction or non-fiction, a story or a poem, as long as the piece relates to the theme. An A4 Page or up to 500 Words is a suggested suitable submission. It’s a chance to be imaginative.

The Competition is open to all schools and college communities including those that are home educated and any other young peoples’ community organisations, for example, community RotaKids, community Interact, Scout Groups, Girl Guides etc.

The three age groups are: Junior 7 to 10 years old; Intermediate 11 to 13 years old and Senior 14 to 17 years old. Entrants must not be above the age parameters for each group on 31st August 2019.

  • 1st February 2023:  Entries from Schools to Clubs. Entries Closing Date. The ‘THEME’ for 2019-2020 is “PEACE”;
  • 14th March 2023:  Entries from Clubs to the District Organiser. Entries Closing Date;
  • 27th March 2023: Entries from the District Organiser to the Rotary GB&I National Organiser. Entries Closing Date;
  • 1st – 3rd May 2023: Rotary GB&I National Final, 2020 Volunteer Expo, National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham. (Note: Exact Date and Venue to be confirmed).

Young Photographer

The Rotary Young Photographer Competition is a well-established and successful competition organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RotaryGBI).

The “THEME’ for 2022-2023 is: “THE BEAUTY OF ARCHITECTURE”.

The Competition aims to encourage young people to:

  • Experiment with photography;
  • Use digital and/or traditional methods of photography;
  • Demonstrate interpretation of the topic;
  • Express ideas through the medium of photography.

There are three age groups: Junior 7-10 years old; Intermediate 11-13 years old and Seniors 14-17 years old. Entrants must not be over the upper age parameter from each group on 31st August 2019.

Young Chef

The Young Chef Competition is a well-established and successful competition organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RotaryGBI) and generously sponsored by Filippo Berio.

The Competition aims to encourage young people to:

  • Learn how to cook a healthy meal;
  • Develop food presentation skills;
  • Consider food hygiene issues;

  • Develop organisational and planning skills;
  • Develop an ability to cope in a demanding situation.

The Competition is open to all schools and college communities and those who are home educated, along with any other young peoples’ community organisations, for example, community RotaKids, community Interact, Scout Groups, Girl Guides etc. Students in part-time (day release) education are not eligible to participate.

This year again, we will be combining the two Cumbria & Lancashire Clubs into one competition at District Level. Please contact your local High Schools as soon as possible to encourage their food technology teachers, who can run a local competition at their schools, so we can have a strong number of entries in our District Final this year. All key dates are detailed below. It is suggested that the individual schools’ winners should be decided in late November early December 2019. If you need help with judging or advice please let one of the District Organisers know.

The ‘Task’ is to prepare in 2 hours, a three course healthy meal comprising starter, main course and dessert for 2 people at a cost of up to £20 which is also funded by sponsoring Rotary Clubs. A reminder that there is a £15.00 entry fee per competitor into the District Final.

Young Musician

The Rotary Young Musician Competition is a well-organised, established and successful competition promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RotaryGBI).

The entrance fee is the same as last year’s which was reduced and is £35 per entrant.

The Competition aims to offer young people:

  • The experience of performing on a public stage;
  • An opportunity to show case their musical talent;
  • Impartial feedback and assessment of their performance by experienced adjudicators.

The Competition is open to all schools and college communities, including those that are home educated and any other young peoples’ community organisations, for example, community RotaKids, community Interact, Scout Groups, Girl Guides etc.

All students (amateur) should be in full time education up to the age of 17 on 31st August 2022. It should be noted that competitors may be 18 at the time of some or all stages of the competition e.g. a competitor who is 17 on 31st August but turns 18 on 1st September may enter.

Please note that this competition is intended for amateurs; for the purpose of the competition, an amateur is considered to be a person whose main source of income is not made from musical performances, although there may be occasions with the receipt of occasional out of pocket expenses or prizes may be received. The competition is not open to full time students of music or performing arts, studying for a qualification above A Level or equivalent.

There are two categories in the Competition:

  • Solo instrumental;
  • Solo vocal.

Young Artist

The Young Artist is a new Competition and is organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (Rotary GBI).

Within District 1190, the Young Artist Competition is a District-Wide competition only. There are no Regional or National entries. Rotary Clubs should send their entries directly to: Jim Hargreaves, District Young Artist Competition Coordinator, 65 Aspen Lane, Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, BB5 4NN. Could Entrants please quote their sponsoring Rotary Club and a full name and address of where to return the pictures, should they want them back!

There are three stages to the competition, each designed to support and encourage the development of artistic skills. Some stages may have more than one round.

The Competition aims to:

  • Be creative;
  • Develop skills in using traditional or contemporary media;
  • Demonstrate interpretation of the topic;
  • Express personal ideas through a selected medium.

There are three age groups: Junior 7 to 10 years old; Intermediate 11 to 13 years old and Senior 14 to 17 years old. Entrants must not be over the upper age parameter for each group on 31st August 2019.

Entrants are asked to submit one picture using any medium or combination of media e.g. Water colour, pencil, charcoal, pastels, collage, and acrylic. Pictures should be no larger than A1 size (594mm x 841mm) and can be on paper or canvas.

Each entrant must give a title to their work and may, if they wish, provide a description of no more than 50 words for their inspiration and how they have chosen to reflect the theme.

The ‘THEME’ for 2022-2023 is: “SUNRISE & SUNSET”.

Young Textile Technologist

This is the 9th year of this District competition and it is now open to Clubs in Cumbria. It is designed to complement competitions for the Design and Technology subjects taught in schools and should not just be aimed at Art or Textiles departments.

The Competition aims to:

  • To encourage students to enjoy designing and making items using textile material.
  • To improve their designing and creative skills plus their confidence when using machinery.
  • To encourage more students to choose textiles as an exam subject at Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and even A level where possible.
  • To encourage schools to continue teaching Textile Technology at all levels.

The 'THEME' for 2022-23 is: "SUNRISE OR SUNSET".

Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2022-23

The deadline for nominating remarkable young people for Rotary Young Citizen Awards 2023 is fast approaching so please use this opportunity to nominate outstanding, inspirational, positive young role models in your community. The deadline for nominations is 14th February 2023.

These awards recognise young people under the age of 25 who have demonstrated their commitment to citizenship, goodwill and understanding through various activities.

The awards can be for individuals or groups, for projects and initiatives that showcase positive citizenship and the important responsibilities assumed by young people.

Nominees do not necessarily have to be working on a Rotary project to be eligible; they just have to be recognised by a local Rotary Club as worthy of nomination.

Winners receive trophies and a £500 prize for their chosen charity. Rotary Young Citizen Awards - Rotary District 1190
