Welcome to our new look District Community/Vocational web pages. Over the coming months these will be developed to enhance the communications of information to and from the Clubs.

The District Committee has gone through a significant change this year with many of the current officers stepping down and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their committee service in recent years.

I would like to welcome on the 2012-13 District Community/Vocational committee and express my thanks to them for volunteering to be part of the District committee.

Furthermore I am very pleased that Ann Acaster, from District 4, Inner Wheel has agreed to act as a liaison point between the District committee and Inner Wheel.

I see this as a very important role as many of the Community/Vocational projects across the District have great synergy with the two organisations and it is important that we take every opportunity to work together to maximise our impact in our communities.

We are extremely fortunate that this year’s theme of Peace Through Service comes at such a crucial and critical time not only for each and every Rotarian but also for our local Communities.

So if Peace comes Through Service the question we have to ask of ourselves is …how much Peace do we want to create?

The District committee have looked at a number of projects to promote this year: all of which in their various ways will help to bring peace….to families…to children…to communities and society. Some of them offer hope, some build self esteem and some just produce a feel good factor, but all bring Peace in some measure to our communities.

Over time Rotarians in every Club have taken up the challenge and delivered projects/programmes to their own Communities and long may these continue.

However, can you truly say that these projects continue to meet the needs and aspirations of your Community? If not is it now the time for you to conduct an audit of your Community, to check on local groups and charities new and old, to find out their current needs and aspirations?

After all how can we give Service Above Self when we do not really know what our community actually require?

As with each Rotary year a number of new projects are tabled and through this website we will promote these for consideration by Rotarians across the District.  However these are not prescriptive, nor are they the limit to what can be done. If you or your Club have a project that you feel needs promotion then please contact the District Community/Vocation committee who will gladly meet with you to discuss a way forwards.

Finally is it time for each and every Rotarian to ask of him or herself  simple but soul searching questions? When was the last time you felt passionate about your Rotary? We all joined Rotary to make a difference but, when was the last time you really did?

If we can all truly challenge ourselves with those questions I am sure we will notice a huge difference in our communities by giving Peace Through Service.

Have a great and fulfilling 2012-13.

Les Bown

D1040 Community/Vocational Chairman
