ROTARY DISTRICT 1030 CHARITY TRUST FUND - Charity No.: 40627321
Background
This charity was envisaged in 1990 and primed with the collections made at our Rotary District presence at the National Garden Festival held at Gateshead that year. This event was attended by a great number of our Rotarians as well as Rotarians from all over the British Isles. The book of signatures placed at the Rotary Stand is still available to be seen, having been carefully archived by PDG George Cooper, who was District Secretary at that time. The amount raised was £18800.
The charity was established in 1992 under the name of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards District 1030 Trust with a sum of £19315.88. Its prime purpose was to support young persons in undertaking leadership training. Monies were disbursed to support Camp RYLA, run at that time by Northumbria Police, and to other individual young adults between the ages of 14 and 22. There were five Trustees, who annually were the most recent Past District Governors.
The Trust continued in this way until 2005. The fund was increased by money raising efforts of individual DGs and PDGs and generally the annual outlay rarely exceeded the annual interest. Over time it became more difficult to arrange meetings. During this time also separate District Trusts were being set up such as the Children and Drugs Trust and the Education Trust.
The District Executive Committee in 2004/5 decided to review what was happening and made recommendations to the Trustees of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards District 1030 Trust for a change. This led to the establishment of the present Rotary District 1030 Charity Trust It started with a fund of £25880 and subsequently received the remaining monies from the two Trusts mentioned in the above paragraph, as they closed.
Trustees of the Fund
The designated Trustees year on year for the Charity Trust are the Immediate Past District Governor (Chair), District Governor, District Governor Elect, District Treasurer, and two members appointed by the Trustees annually, currently Past District Governor Mike Silmon and Rtn. Steve Rose. There is also an Administrator.
Trust Fund Awards
Awards until now have been made to individual young people for worthy enterprises who have been supported by a District Rotary Club which is willing to match the sum awarded. The maximum award by the Trust until now has been £150, although certain exceptions have been made in the past. The purpose of this level of award was only to use the Trust’s annual bank interest to cover the awards. Recent economic circumstances have given the Trustees pause for thought. Last year they agreed to release £1000 irrespective of the amount of interest. At this year’s Annual Meeting the Trustees went for a bolder plan and agree new criteria for applications. These criteria are available by selecting "Current Award Criteria" under "Sub-pages" on the left of this page or below.
