A belated report on our November trip–

Myself, Richard Mayer (Broadlands RC), Frank Taylor (Hatfield RC) and Kevin Pitt (Harlow Tye RC) hit the ground running in Zambia. Well as fast as one can after an all-night flight and an all day drive t Mongu. We were later joined by Steve Evans (Ironbridge RC). Our mission was to inspect as many of the Rotary wells as possible, carry out preliminary consultations for the next big project, assess the impact of the Dictionary4Life, carry out trials of innovative low cost well boring and pump techniques and meet some very good friends at the recently chartered and very active Mongu Rotary Club. It was a very full couple of weeks. There has been a great deal to follow up on, hence the delay in issuing this report.

As usual, we bring heartfelt thanks from those who have benefited.

Thank you to all the clubs who have supported the project so far and please read on.

and here is the next big project –

Sanitation is the first priority and then clean water to help at least 40,000 of Africa’s poorest people out of extreme poverty

Districts 1080 and 1260 applying to a major funder (DfID and/or The BIG Lottery) to match funds from Village Water, Rotary clubs and The Rotary Foundation

Project start – April 2012

Duration – 5 years

Total value £1m

Rotary input at least £250,000

Village Water £250,000

Major Funder £500,000

Location – The extreme west of Zambia close to the Angola border. An area cut off from the remainder of the country for part of the year by the annual Zambezi floods.

Sanitation First will be promoted widely to Rotary clubs throughout RIBI at the WASHE seminar on February 24th and also at the RIBI Annual Conference in Dublin. Early discussions with The Rotary Foundation confirm that the project meets all the current criteria as well as the new rules for ‘Future Vision’. Substantial Matching Grants are anticipated.

Dictionary4LIfe

Frank and the other Richard had some marvellous experiences seeing the benefits that these dictionaries have brought to some very poorly resourced schools. Last year the 2 Rotary districts sent 1,000 dictionaries for distribution by Village Water and 200 for distribution by Mongu Rotary Club. Clubs from both districts have funded a further 800 dictionaries all to be distributed in local schools by Mongu Rotary Club. Unfortunately some clubs were just too late in offering support and we were unable to accept their help. Thanks to all those involved including the District Simplified Grants from both 1080 and 1260.

Progress to date The project register records all 61 communities that have been supported so far by Rotary. Sorry that we have not been able to visit all of the communities but I hope that our fellow Rotarians in Mongu will soon have inspected the remainder. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Seminar,
