Jackie strides out

It was hard work!
Jackie Tagg, a member of North Berwick Rotary, ran the New York Marathon on 7 November – virtually….. on a treadmill over 6 hours in the Gymnasium of the Marine Hotel North Berwick! Jackie's final time was 6 hours 36 minutes 29 seconds  'pounding for pounds'  on the treadmill. She covered a distance 26 miles or 41.7 kilometres and she beat all time champion Haile Gegrselassie!

Her soul mate Keith Hucheson (ex Dunbar) running in New York finished in 5 and a half hours, just in front of Chilean miner, Edison Pena.

Jackie had constant support throughout the Marathon from Rotary, our Area Rotary, the Community,  and through her many friends which was, in the words of  New Rotary, 'awesome'.

Jackie is fit and well - a few blisters but she managed to host a champagne reception in the Marine Foyer (sponsored by the Hotel) directly afterwards, and was out and about next day collecting sponsorship money.

Still going strong

The end!

Jackie herself is a past victim of the Polio virus. The illness left Jackie with a left leg some inches shorter  than the right, and the debility has caused muscle wastage. However Jackie has taken up the challenge and is running interactively with sole mate Keith Hutcheson (ex. of Dunbar) who is competing in New York.

North Berwick Rotary members will provide logistics and support and it is hoped to have the representatives of 1020, RIBI and RI (perhaps even Max Clifford!) present on the day.

District 1020 is morally bound, and no doubt happy as individual Clubs, to donate their Polio fundraising proceeds to Foundation (TRF). Some Clubs will perhaps not have a designated project for Polio funding and may vote a figure from overall Charity Funds and send to Foundation.

Why not sponsor Jackie with these funds and in reality still support Polio?
In this way District 1020 should be able to get 'extra mileage'and each Club will in effect still be sending their support for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The  Rotary PR machine can 'exploit' exposure through the effort of the Rotary Movement (reflecting positively on the relative youth and courage of Jackie)

It is possible that funds in the excess of £40,000 could be achieved for Rotary PR exposure and support for 'End Polio Now. Sponsorship can be allocated after the event.
