Bee Gardens Competition 2012/13
Bee Gardens Competition
This competition is for Key Stage 2 Primary School children. It fulfils many
functions, including the provision of a non-academic competition that will be fun &
hands-on & not least to raise awareness of the survival of the honey bee which is
currently classed as an endangered species.
The bee garden is made manageable for even the smallest of schools by being
created in an old tyre. This will be delivered by the local Rotary Club together with a
bag of peat-free compost and a ten pound note with which to buy seeds or plants.
The Rotary Club of Ribblesdale is piloting this competition this summer and has
raised sponsorship from a local garden centre for the compost, sponsorship from a
local businessman/Rotarian for the seeds and the old tyres are provided free from a
local garage. They just need delivering!
The pupils will be involved in researching the best bee magnets and will learn that
honey bees are responsible for pollinating one third of all the food we eat. If the bee
population dies out completely it does not augur well for the human food chain.
Rotary is again in the forefront of highlighting a need………
