Objective The Rotary Young Chef competition aims to encourage young people to:
· Develop cookery skills.
· Develop food presentation skills.
· Consider healthy eating options and food hygiene issues.
· Prove their organisational and planning skills.
· Prove their ability to cope in a demanding situation.
The National competition is sponsored by Filippo Berio Olive Oils
Age Groups All secondary school ages are eligible for this competition.
Format Competitors are asked to prepare a healthy three course meal for two, without great expense, following the principles of a balanced diet.
Competitions are organised at Club, District, Regional (National Semi-Final) and National level.
Prizes All entrants will receive a certificate
In the National Final, all entrants will receive a special white cotton apron, which after the competition becomes the property of the entrant. The winner of the National final will be presented with a trophy and prizes courtesy of Filippo Berio.
Judging Criteria Competitors are judged on their healthy choice of dishes, planning, costing, range of skills used, neatness of working and hygiene, wise use of time, presentation of table, and taste and presentation of the dishes.
Dates The National Final will be held on Saturday 27 April at Gloucestershire College, Cheltenham. To fit in with this date, District finals will be held during the first half of the Spring term 2013. Clubs should aim to complete their competitions by the end of the Autumn term 2012. Clubs should advise Bryan Bamber by 19 October 2012 of their intention of entering a participant into the District competition.

District submission date: Two weeks prior to the District competition
District Semi-Finals & Final: During the first half of Spring term 2013
Regional Final: 16 March 2013
National Final: 27 April 2013, Cheltenham
Entries Each Rotary Club is entitled to submit a participant for the District competition. Where one club organises a joint competition on behalf of several clubs, each of the several clubs is entitled to submit a participant to the District competition.
Rules Click Young Chef Rules for an abridged version of the National rules. These will apply at District and National competitions. Clubs are free to use their own rules for their club competitions. It is very common for club competitions to be for two courses cooked in 1½ hours.
